in the East: the hypostasis signifies that which subsists individually through itself. The person or hypostasis is a subsisting reality endowed with a proper mode of existing. It includes a special mode of action and a relational capacity, but it is defined foremost by its existence in itself and through itself. Christian reflection has progressively elaborated an understanding of the person that applies to the triune God (and therefore to Christ Jesus), as well as to human beings and to angels.
